Heart-Healthy Foods to Help Prevent and Treat Cardiovascular Illness

Here is our comprehensive Food Chart that is present in the Main Hallway and was compiled in 2019.

Please note the FIVE categories of heart healthy food recommendations, listed below. These foods are full of anti-oxidants, and fiber, which earn a strong cardiology recommendation, and should be consumed daily. These foods are protective of the vessels or endothelium of the human heart, and slow down the process of atherosclerosis, plaque build up.

The first three categories are very low in carbohydrates, which earns a very strong recommendation, and should be consumed daily.

Fruits and legumes have naturally occurring carbohydrates which are good to consume daily in moderation. Berries are fairly low in carbohydrates and are a super food by any standard.

Plant based meats are a healthier alternative to animal meat, as they have a plant, usually bean-base, antioxidants, and fiber. Please be mindful of higher salt content of plant based meats.

Please be mindful of pesticide presence in fruit and vegetables. Wash thoroughly. When possible buy organic.

Foods not on the list that deserve honorable mention - green tea, matcha, garlic, herbs, guava and pineapple guava.

One should be mindful to consume 1800-2200 Calories per day, more if doing vigorous / regular exercise.
